Since completing my first degree in Fine Art at Coventry University more than 10 years ago, I have embarked on a journey into commercial art that has been, above all things, diverse. Setting up my own business ‘Painted Interiors by Design’ in 2002 has opened doors onto an array of interesting clients and commissions from Warwickshire to the West Indies, resulting in a growing list of patrons. Specialising in mural work, the commissions I have undertaken include; a wide range of murals for walls and ceilings, design work, architectural illustrations and even the complete paintwork restoration of an authentic decorated gypsy caravan.
The development of my own artistic concerns has run alongside the commercial work. After finishing my MA in Art History by Research at The University of Warwick in 2000, which was centred on the reception of Marcel Duchamp’s oeuvre on artists of the 1960’s, my interests have been firmly rooted in art historical sources. Inspiration for my own work comes from those artists whose works are steeped in visual poetry, including Robert Morris’s early work, Joseph Cornell, Cornelia Parker, Jannis Kounelis, Robin Rhode and above all Marcel Duchamp.
My work reflects an analysis of the inner and outer; what we project and what we hide, the balanced and the unbalanced, the hinged and unhinged side of ourselves; the fine line between the inside and the outside. The works contain objects, text and diagrammatic symbols to hint at the indefinable things within us. They offer tools for communication in the guise of written and borrowed text and symbols but deter an absolute reading; they are aimed at provoking thought and recognition through visual poetics.
